Nel punto dove sorge il Bastione d’Italia (o anche detto Bastione del Carretto) le truppe di Maometto II riuscirono ad entrare in città anche se poi nell’assedio del 1480 furono respinte. In seguito a questo episodio il bastione venne rinforzato con l’aggiunta del passo di ronda e con le postazioni per i cannoni. Di fronte ad esso è stato costruito il Terrapieno d’Italia.
