L’Osservatorio Nazionale di Atene fu il primo osservatorio fondato in Grecia. Nacque nel 1842 grazie ad una prima donazione da parte del Barone Georgios Sinas, ambasciatore a Vienna, che permise la costruzione del primo edificio, Sinas Building, in stile neoclassico a forma di croce con una cupola dotata di telescopio.
