Quest’area della città nel 1819, secondo il volere del fondatore di Singapore, fu riservata a scopi pubblici. Purtroppo però negli anni a seguire fu molto utilizzata dai mercanti per i loro affari. Oggi il Padang ospita campi di calcio, cricket e rugby e viene utilizzato per eventi cittadini, come la Parata della Festa Nazionale.
