Il ponte originale è stato costruito qui nel 1676 e chiamato Ponte Essex in onore del conte di Essex. Nel 1722 viene installata sul ponte una statua equestre di Re Giorgio I che venne poi rimossa una trentina d’anni più tardi durante un nuovo rifacimento. Il ponte così come lo conosciamo è stato inaugurato nel 1874 e prende il nome di Henry Grattan. Il ponte è stato ampliato con ghisa in modo da realizzare ampi marciapiedi su entrambi i lati della carreggiata.
